At Standish Family Dental Health, we want to provide you with optimal oral health treatments from general cleanings to periodontal treatments, including dental implants. Dental implants are intended to treat patients who have missing or lost teeth due to a traumatic event or other cause. These implants will allow for increased functionality of your bite and may allow you to enjoy foods you could not consume prior to treatment.
Types of Treatments
Although most people presume there to be only one form of implant, there are actually three different types.
- Root Implants: the most popular implant, as it mirrors the size, shape, and strength of a natural tooth. This artificial tooth will be placed directly into the jawbone and will take 3-8 months to be fully healed.
- Plate Form Implant: this is ideal for situations where the jawbone is not wide enough to support a root implant. This long, thin implant will be anchored into the jawbone.
- Subperiosteal Implant: used only when the jawbone has receded to an extent where it cannot support an implant.
Brushing and flossing regularly is important to maintain good oral hygiene in every day life, however, its importance is compounded following a implant treatment. After the implants have been placed, your mouth is susceptible to a number of harmful bacteria that can cause your gums to swell and your jawbone to recede. We advise you to have visits to our office every 6 months so that we can monitor the health of your teeth and implants.
